Default High Def on ordinary DVD

Sorry if this has been answered before, but below is a quote from the pinnacle site and it reads to me that High Def can be burned onto an ordinary DVD (which I knew) by an ordinary DVD writer (which I didn't) I remember asking before but either old age kicked in and I forgot or the thread got diverted. Is it true and if so is it aPinnacle thing or can it be done on other software?

DVD burner for creating DVD, HD-DVD and AVCHD discs on standard media*

Pending a proper reply by the grown ups...
    AFAIK..
Any file can be put on DVD as data, .doc, .tif, .jpg,.pdf, .htm etc and use it as a data storage device.
That doesn't mean that various hardware will recognise it.
A single hd video file burnt as data onto DVD could be read by PC's and conceivably, likes of Playstations .
Naturally it would be limited by size of media (4.7gig single layer/side) and the data rate at which it can read for realtime play (unless it can copy to internal hard drive or buffer).

You could even burn the file to a CD using plain old Nero. It would be just the same as saving the file to a hard disk or SD card.

Your last sentence intrigues me, it seems to suggest that you could use ordinary DVD media with a standard DVD writer to produce a disc that would play in an HD-DVD player?

There was a discussion about this a short while ago regarding Vegas 8, which (it seems) can burn HD material on to an SL DVD blank which will be recognised by certain Blu-ray players (but not all, it seems, for example a PS3 will not play such a disk, it will only play individual files). The question that wasn't answered (if my memory is correct) was whether a DVD burner (rather than a Blu-ray burner) was needed.

The last sentence was from the pinnacle site and that is how I read it.

    OK

I have a file rendering as HD 720p, size 3.7gb in LE 7.2

I am putting thisfile on a dvd-r as a simple burn to DVD operation in a standard DVD burner (Not through LE). It will then be shoved in the PS3. If that doesn't work I will stick it in a folder called Video on a DVD-R as I believe the PS 3 likes to look for files in Video folders.

I will then let you know what has happened

    Chris,

I have just conducted some tests. I put six HDV files (as in .m2t) in the root of a data DVD. Their sizes ranged between 350MB and 1.2GB. A freind who has a PS3 and a Toshiba 42inch LCD then tested them for me. Five of the clips were normal 1080/25i and the last one was shot with the FX1's cineframe setting giving a sort of 25p. (No doubt Alan R will be along to tell me to wash my mouth out for saying that!)
He tells me that the 25i clips played OK but his setup had problems with the cineframe as movement was blurred and jerky.
I have heard that PS3s will only output 25p or 30i/60p depending on HDMI negotiations with the display. His TV was 1080/25i/30i so it tried 'reverse telecine'? to show the clip as 30i with 2/3 pulldown. Not very good apparently.

Yup DVD-R with Folder called Video and mpeg 2 HD file located within plays from ps 3. Didn't first time but did 2nd time (?). Watching to see if it stutters/loses sync.

So Standard DVD creation with a data dvd will play back on ps3.

    (and also copy to hdd)

Steve had this in preparation while you posted.

    Steve (et al)

I am now rendering at 1080i rather than 720. Maybe tomorrow before I can report back as busy day and early start - bed beckons.

I do have some 25p shot material but that expt is not for tonight either.

There were a couple of minor glitches in playback, I will have to watch and see if they appear at same place or are a lack of buffering.

Just ordered a HV30 so perhaps I will be joining in the fun soon. Grandson has PS3 and HD TV so will be able to experiment if my computer will handle the HDV and I get a program that handles it.
