White and Grey

At present i'm still using FCP-X 10,0,8 and getting on fine. A slight problem has occurred which is puzzling me.
When working in the Project section and I scrub my cursor across the timeline after the end of the video clip, instead of having a black bar in my viewer I have a white and grey square effect like a chess board. Even some of my video clips which are sort of letter box format, which should have black on top and button are of the same format of grey and white squares.
Have i pressed anything in the Inspector?. How can i get my empty timeline back to black?
Thank You

Hi
Have you set it in some way to show only Alpha Channels?
Does the selector in the Inspector when you change from Basic View to Settings View help?

Thank you Paul. Going to the help section in FCP-X i cant find the two tasks you are asking me to check. Basically i understand what you are asking me to do but dont know what buttons to press or the path to take.
Basically ones timeline should be black. I wish i could take a picture.

Re: White and Grey
I have solved the problem by pure accident. Went into preference and clicked on play section. Which said PLAYER BACKGROUND. One for Checker and one for Black and White and one for Black.
At some stage i must have gone in and pressed the wrong item.
