At 22:40 on Monday 5 Feb 07, somebody slipped into my Garden office whilst I was on a loo break.

They took:

- 17" PowerBook G4, 3 years old, heavy (!) wear to the keyboard area, Fn 8 button missing, pitting and corrosion either side of the trackpad, the trackpad is well-knackered thanks to loving attention of toddler son, but otherwise fine...
- SN to be supplied once I've finished cruising multiple backups...

- HVR Z1 with Hawk Woods NPR970 equivalent attatched
- SN 1220130

Also - Pentax Optio 750z 7 Megapixel digital stills camera, Sennheiser PXC-250 headset, 5G black iPod 60Gb, Sony Ericsson P-900, all in a silver/black Antler backpack.

Of course it all was - I was about to lock up for the night. The scroats were watching and struck in a 5-10 minute window. They were watching, saw an opportunity and took it.

Sorry to hear that Matt, a real sickener, hope you haven't lost any tapes. I also hope your local bobby has an idea who is likely to have been the culprit.

Good luck, John

Under such circumstances - Insured..... ? Damn druggies usually the culprits. Next door to me had similar into his house. Garden tub thrown through the rear casement window whilst they were out on a midday meal. Another neighbour gave a description of the two culprits who climbed over the locked side gate to gain access. Sojme time later, arrested. Admitted large number of other similar offences perpetrated for drug money. Unpaid work in the community together with promise to conform to treatment was the punishment - and the neighbour never got back his stuff. New computer and alarm boxes front and rear is the result.

I wish you well and hope there is a capture.

Ron.

Update...

Incredible though it may sound, somebody may have inadvertently purchased my Z1 and ran a check of its serial number over the web - and learned that it was stolen.

I'm going to send that person a 'finder's reward' but over that, I wanted to let everyone here know that as well as the scroats, there are some wonderful people out there who embody all that is good and human and just.

But what to do about the info? I think there's lots of innocent parties who may have 'touched' my camera. Do I report back to the Police and possibly subject those on the trail to inconvenient if not downright truculent questioning? Do I send a little gift to the finder and chalk the whole thing up to experience? I'd prefer that, but more than a year on, it's stirred up emotions of rage and injustice. The guy who bought my stolen camera bought it through somebody else, who bought it from somebody who didn't know it was stolen. Or maybe they did. Whatever.

The scroat who stole it (and the rest) probably wouldn't have given the situation a second thought, but the insurance did NOT cover anything, it was - in the end - a £7k bill that should have been used to care for my family. Do we use the feeling of retribution to use this new info to further the investigation to find who's doing this? Or do we avoid causing any more pain, send commiserations to those who are also financially hit by the original crime, and get back to making movies and money?

Retribution or Retreat?

If I was buying a second hand camera I'd be careful not to buy stolen stuff. The problem is that tere are too many peopel who condem theft and yet would buy stuff that's too cheap to be legal.

I doubt that even providing all the links to the camera will result in anything but I'd pass on the details to the police if it were me.

When we converted a mate's garage ito a recording studio we had to beef up the windows with laminated glass tripple glazing and double sets of doors etc. The result - as well as being sound proof enough to have a rock band play pretty loud inside, - it's pretty much harder to get in than the house is.

Hope you get at least some of your stuff back!

My Z1 is back.

Joy of joys, I now hold HVR-Z1E Serial Number 1220130 in my hand. The person who bought it has passed on details of who he bought it from.

It has been working hard in the South of France, and has recently completed filming of a documentary in the Cameroon. I hope it will be happy filming conferences from now on.

A couple of funny things, though: it's the same battery, it still had my Sachtler tripod plate on the bottom, every single one of my picture profiles, assign buttons and setups were unchanged. Only the language had been changed from English to French and the audio switched from 2 inputs/channels to 1 input to 2 channels.

But most importantly, there are good decent people out there, doing the right thing. Thank you.

That's great news Matt, nice to hear something positive for a change, maybe it will lead to the recovery of the rest of your equipment.

Matt - poor in quality with their investigatory work on your sort of crime, the police should still being formed because it sounds to me as if they'll have a not too difficult task in tracing back unless the last one in the trail says it came from an anonymous person.....

Best of luck and congratulations on the return.

Ron.
