iMovie frozen, won't allow me to open individual projects

I am having huge problems with my iMovie. At first, I noticed that when I glided my cursor over the top section of my project (the edited bit) the sound or video would not play and show up on the preview screen. The whole top section was unresponsive whenever I tried to interact with it, I couldn't cut or delete anything. I also couldn't export what I had done. So I clicked on the bit where it takes you back to review all my projects, and then I was stuck there. It won't let me go back onto editing the projects, the option is greyed out and double clicking doesn't work.

In my iMovie 11, I have two projects and 11 hours of footage in one event. Understandably, this could be making my computer slow and unstable, but I think the real start of the problem occurred when I tried to work on it on another account (there are two accounts on my iMac). I copied my project and the folder which I had been using for everything I had put into my project (video, images, sound files). I dragged the copy to the Shared folder and I opened iMovie on the other account and imported everything in that folder and opened my projects. It didn't work, I think it either froze or nothing happened at all. When I went back onto the main account, this is when the problem started, as I explained in the top paragraph. I have heard that it must be avoided, having two accounts logged on, while using iMovie.

I don't think there are any experienced iMovie users here, I think you have probably exacerbated the problem by copying the project, I'd also suggest 11 hours of footage is better stored on a removable drive rather than the system drive. If this was a Final Cut Pro problem  my own suggestions would first be to run Onyx (free) to repair any system problems and clear the caches, then I'd probably delete the iMovie prefs plist file - user/library/prefs. If both of these failed, I'd look at copying the project files to a removable drive (then checking the files have been copied to the portable drive) and then re-installing iMovie (maybe under a new third user account?).

Just browsing around to see if I could find any answers to your problem I noticed your post on the Mac iLife board, you mention there you're using Mavericks, I'm guessing you upgraded mid-project which is not really recommended with a large project such as yours, Apple have a habit of releasing a new OS and software and then letting users find the bugs before Apple then bring out a 0.1 release very soon after the release of the new OS!

If the Onyx/plist suggestion fails I'd save the project and video files to an external drive, do a re-install of 10.8.5 and iMovie 11, import the project to a fresh iMovie install, finish the project then upgrade to Mavericks.

The first thing you need to do is give full information regards what software you are using and how the problem started. But reading from the second post this is what has happen.
Firstly you upgraded to Maverick did you also upgrade the new iMovie version? if you did then you have problems as iMovie those not reconizes you last Project or Event. Go to Application and you will still see your other iMovie version. Reopen that.
Also get those 11 hour of your mac and put them into e external Hard Drive. Your computer is working over time with 11 hours.
Lets know how you are getting on.

Did you ever solve this problem? I see you didn't respond on the Apple iLife forum either, it would be good to know if,  and how you did for future reference.

Have you notice the first time posters have a habit of taking information but very slow in coming forward.
When upgrading to Maverick all new trial plug ins appeared in my FCP-X.
I think we will get a reply?????????????

I don't like to see a lack of response after an initial request, especially as the responders take time and trouble in an effort to assist . . . !
