I want to stream video using a Sony DCR-TRV22E camcorder but my Sony/Vista computer says camera is unrecognised device!

I am trying to use a Sony DCR-TRV22E camcorder and a Sony VGC-JS2E computer with Windows Vista with a plan to make videos straight onto the computer using the camcorder as a webcam. I thought I could use a firewire cable to do this but this doesn't even detect (make any sort of ping noise) when camera is in any sort of mode at all. The computer does however 'ping' when I connect the camera via the USB cable but the computer wont recognise the devise and cant locate any drivers to make it work. I have the camera in DV out and USB on. Any help would be much appreciated...

Hi Kate

You don't mention any capture software that you are using, if any.  If not you need a programme which can capture video from your camera to the PC.  You might have Windows Movie Maker which could have been supplied with Vista loaded.  If so try that.

Now with a PC Specialist Quad Core i7-3770, 16GB RAM, 180GB SSD, GeForce GTX560 Ti Graphics Card, Blu-Ray & DVD R/W Burners and can't wait to set it up. Now up and running.  What a difference in Blu-Ray footage.

Thanks Harry, yes I have tried with the camera plugged in with both Windows Movie maker and Adobe Flash Media Encoder 3.2. Neither programme detects the camera. I use the Adobe programme to make live videos using my HP webcam no problem at all. But I wanted to use the camcorder to get a better picture as the webcam's video quality is really poor :(

This could be the ol' legacy firewire driver issue if the computer isn't even recognising the camera when connected by firewire.

Karen, if you search these forums for "legacy firewire" you should be able to find a recent discussion about this.

Also go on the Sony web page and see what software your camcorder is accepted for.
