I have a want to get another camera slider. I used to have a 1.5 metre glidetrack, but like many of my filmy things I had to sell it on to help pay for a movie I was making.

Of course I should mention that I didn't really like it either. I never truly got amazing results.

So I see theres various options available now, two priced at the lower end.

An appealing home spun version I can see on ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/video-camera-DSLR-photographic-slider-dolly-/190565760465?pt=UK_Tripods_Monopods&hash=item2c5e9abdd1#ht_1956wt_1141

and an Opteka version

Has anyone any thoughts on the use of sliders or recommendations for versions of them. I am these days always seeking cost effective solutions. I've had a look for a similar thread but have had no luck.

the chap from Yorkshire seems like the right bloke to get it from. It's less refined than glidetrack, but is the only alternative I've seen so far that I think I would trust. D

I have to admit that when I see something like the home spun version in the original post my first thought is, can I make one myself.
An abandoned knitting machine maybe, don't they slide along?
I see that he's sold 10 of them, anyway.
I've never used one, I surmise that the idea is you can pan your camera (or camcorder) parallel with the subject?
I've made a couple of DIY conventional dollies, surely they are way more versatile than a slider dolly?

The opteka one there, look like the same Igus rail extrusion that most others are made of, but with a few mods. I bought the bits myself from Igus and made my own. I can only get good results with a DSLR, or simple slides with a small camcorder.

I made one of these from a piece of 1 metre Aluminium door threshold from Wilkinsons, 4 shower door slider wheels, some 4mm plate Aluminium and a few screws. The result is, in my opinion just as good as a bought one (have you seen the price of some of them)
