C Drive Files

My Edius system "C" drive is showing RED saying that off a capacity of 149GB I only have 12GB free. Looking at the files in that drive, windows, programes etc I see that I have a total of 44.77 used so my question is, "Where are the files hiding to make up 93GB?

Any help appreciated.

Re: C Drive Files

The most obvious answer is the Recycle Bin, since files accupy space until the bin is actually emptied.

After that I would reveal ALL files (including Hidden and System files), then check the sizes of the folders one by one to see if one is suspiciously large.

Temp files (Edius?) sometimes hold enormous files. These usually hold the edit clues for various projects. Any not in current use can be deleted.

A massive amount of memory seems to be gobbled up by the creation of system restore points - if you are happy your system is running fine then you could delete all but the most recent system restore point (this is an option whilst doing a disk cleanup)

You could try one of these: (AFTER you've made sure the bin is empty, and you've still got a problem):

That's a bummer, I've always found removing system restore points clears out a big chunk of space (it frees up about 50% of the harddrive in my better half's laptop)

Hi Barry, Happy New Year to you.

Have you tried the disk cleanup app?
I think it's in the system folder.
Most of the files are probably windows updates and temp files for stuff that needed to be unzipped.
I know by default Premiere puts it's scratch folder on the 'C' drive, maybe Edius does the same?
Files will be huge in that, you should default it to another drive.

Hi Phil, Happy New Year to you as well, I`ve tried the disc clean up tool with no result, I would have thought that the scratch files would have shown up although when I went into the settings I couldn`t find any reference to "scratch files" or similar. Thanks for your thoughts though.

Re: C Drive Files
Hi Barry,

Mmmm, I think the only answer then is a reload of windoze. I find it speeds up everthing anway. I do mine every year or so, but I have to say I've run Win7 on a 240GB SSD drive for I think 18 months now and I still have 100GB free.
Dunno what is clogging up your drive - a pain in the arse to reload, but worth that pain as I find Win7 very stable and great to use.
I haven't even looked at Win8... does anyone have it?
I haven't been on the forum for a while so I don't know what everyone's opinion is.
Can't see myself changing Win7 and CS6 combo for a very long time.
FYI - I have had a bit of a business change.... I have a JOB!
At MY AGE!

Re: C Drive Files
Found! My tech guy called in this morning to see me & found the files in the Adobe "Common" folder which had been created by "Encore" when authoring DVD`s He Googled the file extension & was led to a post re deleting these files which you can do from within Encore!!!!! Go to preferences/media/clean button, which imediately freed up 74 gig! So anybody suffering similar woes now has the answer. Deleting these files does not affect the "assets" of Encore, just the temp files, as suggested by someone earlier. Thanks guyssmiley

Good to know you eventually found it - A few minutes spent on a search of 'temp' files and their contents would have shown the culprit and saved you many days of frustration diving into system configs etc. :D

Problem was buried deep! and when I clicked on the parent folders or selected all it didn`t show up, also I "Assumed" it was caused by Edius, in actual fact it was Encore that was the culprit.
