How does one go about getting Windows XP to recognize the Z1E camera in HD mode? It recognizes it fine in DV mode.
This is unlikely to be something that matters greatly for a while, but it would be nice to try some HD editing.
Do I need special software?

i think you need a software codec/etc to talk to the camera in hdv mode.
richard @ dvc etc should be able to confirm this.
edius has a codec ( and canopus hardware )
premiere has a codec
there is a thread round here about the addons / hdv

That's right. Just because the camera has a 1394 socket that you can connect to a PC doesn't mean they'll talk to each other. The HDV data-stream travels via 1394 but isn't DV any more than any other data stream is. So you need software to deal with it, and that means the right plug-in for your editor.

Hi Ed
You need XP SP2 for the HDV part of the camcorder to be recognised.

I think you also need the Premiere Pro 1.5 patch from:

Yes, I've installed the patch but I'm worried about installing SP2 after all the nightmares I heard about it. Am I safe to install it on the two systems below without fear of conflicts do you think?

sp2 is fine for everything i use EXCEPT divx encoding from procoder le.
there is a problem with the divx codec interacting with windows xp sp2.
