Can you record in hd then change to sd for burning to media dvd etc? or do u have to chose format first?

simple answer is yes.
you can edit in hd and then output at whatever you want from the timeline , assuming the program you are using has those options.
Edius does , i didn't look at the others beyond loading timelines , but don't see either Ulead or Adobe not installing those options.
( I am not answering for Apple as we didn't have one , but PaulD can probably tell us Apples position )

two parts to this, based upon what i have seen so far :
1. the hdv output from an hdv edit will not degrade anymore than the dv output from a dv edit does today , if handled by a good conversion process (codec ) etc.
2. therefore when you downgrade it (hdv) to dv , the quality should be as good as dv to dv would have been as a minimum.
personally i therefore see it at worst as being the same quality that you get from present top end dv cameras.
so i would happily move to hdv now if i could afford
1. the camera.
2. the computer to edit it.
3. the software to edit it.
