That will allow me to take a video file from my computer and dump it to a firewire VTR.
OK I know I can do this in final cut and avid but I was just wondering if there is such a beast out there that will allow a simple workflow from tapeless files to VTR decks for archiving purposes.
I have mpegstreamclip which seems to accept most file formats and allow you to export and downconvert but to have firewire dump to VTR deck/camera would be great.

SimpleVideoOut (http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/SimpleVideoOut/index.html)? (Mac only, and limited video formats, but if you want PAL-DV down Firewire, it's fine.)

Thanks will have a look at that, I am mainly in HDV and pro res so it will be good to see how it handles that.
I suppose all I want is a simple way of dumping to tape for archive purposes with the added bonus of clocks and bars etc.

May not be feature-rich enough for that - it just feeds a QT video file out of the Firewire port - no processing, no bells, no whistles.

How about VLC. It can be configured route files to destinations via HTTP and UDP protocols, so if the end device had an ip address it may be able to receive the video stream. It would need to be sent as 'Raw' i.e. without any encapsulation and with no transcoding.
Just a thought.

Hi
SimpleVideoOut only works in DV or DVCPro HD formats (and maybe out to component via a Matrox MXO) - so to do HD would require a Panasonic HD deck.
The problem is that HDV's GOP structure has to be conformed to send it out via FW, so an application like FCP (HDV or ProRes 422) or FCE/iMovieHD (AIC) is an essential component - both for the conforming and the device control.

If your files are in M2T (i.e. raw transport streams) format then there is a program called Virtual DVHS in the Apple Firewire DEveloper's SDK that can record and play these back from a HDV device (I've used it to record HDV directly to my laptop drive on a number of occasions).
