View Full Version : Vegas render stalling

Has anyone any ideas, I'm trying to render a 1hr project in Vegas 8.0c, it keeps stalling at 53%, usually the same frame, (34minutes). I've examined this area in detail and even changed the clip, it still does it. A render of a 1min loop over this area completes with no problem.
HDV, rendering to Bluray 1440x1080, 50i, 25Mbs. I do have some stills in the project.
Intel Q6600 @ 2.40GHz, 2.00 Gb ram, Windows XP, SP3.
Any ideas? I'm thinking about reducing the resolution of the stills, I've imported them at full resolution, 12Mb, but the process goes through a number of them before this point.

Nick, check the hard drive has plenty of space on the drive, that's caught e out a few times.
Highlight the section that it stops at and see if you can render that bit only just to check there are no errors there, I have had the odd problem with the border plug in in the past if I used the pre- toggle.
V8c in the Vegas forums some (not all) people have been complaining of some issues on rendering, I would if possible if you upgraded, go back and restore to the previous issue of B if possible or re-install V8b again if you have a copy , if not look on the Sony site for archives it should be there.

Thanks for the suggestions. Ithink the hard drives are fine, the two I'm using have 75 & 76 Gb free. I think it is a memory problem, after I reduced the resolution of a still close to the stall point, it went a few frames further! I also got a low memory warning.
Windows system restore didn't help. I eventually found Vegas 8.0b on a hard drive, I thought I'd got rid of it. Couldn't find it on the Sony site.
Unfortunately that was no better. Just trying after using Enditall, if that doesn't work I'll try reducing the stills resolution. Its a fun way to spend the day, my wife is a bit upset that some decorating isn't being done!

Is the low memory warning of low virtual memory?
if so go into my Computer and see what settings are there and see if it is on "Let Windows Manage My Settings". How mush RAM is fitted in the PC?
Also look in V8 and see what memory you have reserved for pre-rendering
I use 10m pxel stils n my projects with no problems.

I would try a reinstall. If you upgraded Vegas make sure that you cleaned out all the old temp install files from the previous version, and that you did a reboot after you uninstalled the previous Vegas build (say B) and reboot again after installing the next version.
You could also try adjusting the allocated RAM for prerenders within the Vegas preferences. I used to have issues with rendering slowing down to 1 frame every 3 minutes until it was suggested to me to try adjusting this (bringing it down rather than up).
Another thing you could try, in case it is a silly bug, is to nest your existing timeline in another project and seeing if it still stalls when you render from that.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions, I've been away for the last few days, I'll have another go this weekend.
Vegas 8.0b didn't help in the end. The last I tried on Sunday was worse than the first efforts! I think I'll have to go into the memory settings.
I think its the PC and not Vegas thats the problem. I think I mess with it too much!!
I'll feed back at the weekend, trouble is my wife's decorating problem!
Thanks again.

Have you got a laptop you can install it on and and least get on with the render?

Some thoughts:
1. Try defragmenting the source and destination disks (doesn't hurt anyway)
2. Source may be corrupt. Delete a large chunk of frames around the problem area and see if it renders the rest or bring that chunk into a new project and see if it renders (the latter would be quicker) - though I note the clip renders in a loop.
3. When it approaches the problem frames, monitor Performance in Task Manager, looking for extraordinary activity on the graphs (CPU and disk paging).
4. Click on Start, Right-Click on My Computer, choose Manage. Open Event Viewer then look in the logs of Application and System for any Warning or Error events. Especially if they mention RAM or Disk issues that are timestamped around the same time as the rendering.
Let me know - I work at Microsoft.

I'm finally burning my disc. Thought I'd feedback.
I defragmented the discs, freed up more space, the C drive was about 70% full. I also tried to mess with the virtual RAM and the other settings suggested.
Initially I achieved a 53% render, then shorter and shorter times.
End it all didn't help this time, once Vegas wouldn't even load the project.
I decided to render in fragments, restarting after each one. I rendered into the setting for DVDA Bluray, eventually 8 fragments! I thought I could stitch them together in DVDA, but you can't, so I decided to do it in Vegas. Vegas doesn't import these files! I then rendered the project again as HDV in fragments, 4 this time, stitched them in Vegas then rendered for DVDA successfully.
The problem appears to be Heroglyph, I'm using it as a plugin, I've several route animations.
When I start rendering the PF usage is about 1.4Gb, this stays roughly the same increasing slightly with the 12 megapixel images, but when the Heroglyph animation comes in it starts climbing, up to 1.7-8, and stays there after this bit is rendered, and a second one takes it up to 1.9 - 2Gb. When the next still comes along the system stalls and becomes unresponsive.
I think next time I'll try making the animations outside Vegas and import them in, it might be better.
Well my project will soon be burnt onto a rewritable and I'll be able to check it, if I can bear to see it again!
Thanks for all your help.
