Seems JVC are signing up with Sony to produce XDCAM EX recorders for their HD camcorders...

Presumably not the news Panasonic wanted to hear...

Quite so - and as I said in the other thread, "Be interesting to see what Canon do now......... "
(I'd have put my money on JVC/Canon going with CF, but never mind.)

Sorry missed that (problems of being in the other hemisphere this week and all that!) :)

It'll be interesting to see. I guess SxS has the advantage that it doesn't need a card reader to be carried with the laptop, adding something else to fail in the system and of course, from JVC's point of view by going with XDCamEX they don't have to develop any software to support it and negotiate support from Apple, Avid, Adobe et al...

it's surprising as Panasonic and JVC are basically the same company - even producing rebadged gear together

Good point - which raises the query in my mind if there is any fundamental technical problem to going with XDCamEX, but recording to a CF card?
My suspicion is not - the Convergent XDR seems to record compliant MPEG2 files with a Sony chip, but recorded to Compact Flash, and they seem to say that approved 133x cards can handle up to the 100Mbs data rate.

Is that still true? I believe they both had the same parent (Matsushita) but didn't JVC get sold off?

In 2008, Matsushita agreed to spin-off the company and merge with Kenwood creating JVC Kenwood Holdings, to be formed on October 1st, 2008

Edited bit......"since 1953, JVC has been owned by Matsushita, who held a majority stake in the company until August 2007."

Correct, although Panasonic and JVC are owned by Matsushita, they are now autonomous and trade separately.

Even more news I suspect Panasonic didn't want to hear - http://www.tvbeurope.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1438&Itemid=1
Be even better news for the consumer if it didn't use proprietary media, but if you have to have that, Ikegamis package has quite a lot going for it. Cameras with full 2Mpixel chips, MPEG2 at 50 or 100Mbs, (already supported by NLEs), and media which just plugs into a USB port - no adaptors. (And apparently cheaper than P2.)

I've been keeping an eye on the GFCAM for a while. It looks like a really good system.
