GrassValley have announced Edius 5, an HDStorm card and other new products here:
http://desktop.thomsongrassvalley.com/products/productsmain.php
The feature that appeals to me is the HDMI input/output on the card; there is an optional bay for S-video/composite and HD/SD component connections. E 5 also comes with several useful plugins.
No doubt we shall soon be hearing about upgrade paths.

Usual disclaimer because of my vested interest.
There will be some large discounts for upgrade available, but only until Christmas. Also some interesting work flows are available if you add Black Magic HDSDI to HDMI converters.
Im just back from IBC and there was a real buzz about this.

Any info on when upgrades will be available in the U.K. and at what price Richard? I don't see any info on the Holdan site yet.

Any competitive cross-upgrade prices, eg from Avid Liquid?
Cheers.

No talk of competitive upgrade that I have heard. Looks like Thomson GV/Canopus are looking out for their old customers first.

What are the benefits of the HDStorm when using AVCHD? It has been posted on the Edius forum that when capturing AVCHD with E5 date and time data does not appear in the bin. Can you confirm this? Will using HDMI capture offer any benefit here?

In my tests with Panasonic AVCHD you do keep the date and time information when you convert to HQ in the bin using batch convert. AVCHD conversion is slower with this method than the AVC2HQ free utility, but the info is retained. I have flagged this to development and hope it is acted on soon.
I have yet to try an HDSTORM via HDMI so I'll report when I've tried it myself. I believe HDMI can carry device control and other information, but I don't have any information on how it is utilised at present.

Hi Richard, does product registration on their site count as "proof of purchase"? Or do they want more?

Thank you for the reply which is more than I have been able to get from the Edius forum so far!

HDMI was invented as a consumer interface between consumer kit bits. So, if you connect a recorder to a tv set via HDMI, and set the tv set to "record" a tv programme, the tv set will turn on the recorder as needed and set it recording, you don't need separate programming. At least, that's my understanding of it, not having access to enough bits of kit to prove it for myself. But it's how my Panasonic plasma should talk to a Panasonic recorder. We'll see :)
So, HDMI must carry metadata to signal machine control.

Hi Rob.
You need a digital photo of the project, or a photocopy or scan of the manual or original receipt. If you bought from DVC they should be able to reprint the invoice.

Thanks Richard, one came from DVC and the other direct from Canopus. I think I have invoices for both if I dig in the files.
I'm thinking of changing my systems radically at the same time. This raises a question which may be of interest to other readers of this thread:
Leaving aside the enhanced I/O options and RS422 control does an SP perform any better than an HD Storm? If, as I suspect, the answer is either no, or the HDStorm is actually better in terms of hardware codecs it would help me.

The performance of the SP and NX was identical, and I would imagine that the same would be true of a comparison with the HDSTORM.
I think the inclusion of the HQ Codec on the HDSTORM would tip the balance, I would trade the XLR inputs and RS422 machine control on the SP for HD Component Input and hardware HQ and HDMI I/O. I asked if RS422 could be added to an HDSTORM and I was told no.

Having had wonderful service from my two DV Storms over the past seven years, the idea of an HD Storm is very tempting. Any chance that Edius will join the grown-ups with a full picon display and surround sound, Richard?

I'm sorry Ray - none of the other grown ups are requesting that. Pop into any grownup post
production suite and there isn't a picon in sight. ;-)
Sorry, couldn't resist.
Seriously surround sound is likely but not soon, picons will never happen.
I'm really looking forward to seeing HDMI workflow and the acceleration of having a hardware HQ codec. You will be able to see it working at the IOV show if you are coming.

Hi Richard
Let's check what a couple of competing products are offering.
Picon display in Premiere Pro? Yes.
Picon Display in Vegas? Yes.
Looking forward to IOV. I wonder if they'd be interested in a 'Picons - Choice or No Choice?' discussion group?

Hi Richard,
Personally, I'm picon agnostic. I like them in Vegas and Prem but I don't miss them in Edius. On the other hand, 5.1 is absolutely essential. It's alright for the likes of me with access to pro level DAWs, but a bit of a fag for most people. 5.1 is now the delivery standard whether we like it or not and it doesn't have to be a big deal to do. (For the editor that is).
