Hi all,

Arthur Burge, a local TV engineer has asked me to post this message, as he has found it impossible to register with DVdoctor with his current email address... goodness knows why!
I can personally recommend him as he has done several repairs and cable work for me.
This is what he has to say:

I have started a comprehensive business for the repair of audio and video equipment as was my job at Exeter College for 15 years where I repaired everything from broadcast cams & vtr's down to the humble overhead projector, including 4000 analogue & DV cam repairs.

Contact Arthur on acwburge@yahoo.co.uk or mob 07518052610

I had the same problem with my email address when i tried to join this forum, i was told that my email address was "banned", i was using a "hotmail" address, maybe the yahoo ones are the same.
I got round it by getting a free Googlemail account then joined with that.
Tell your friend to try that.

Paul.

Does your friend have a web site & where is he located? Curios as to whether he`s local i.e. Devon.

Hello

I too would like to speak up on Arthurs behalf. I've used him to repair decks and camera before and he knows his stuff. I worked with him for many years and there was nothing this man couldn't fix. He's an ace with cameras, deck's and power supplies to mention a few.

He is based just outside Exeter so is local to you Barry. Otherwise I can drop gear off to him if you like as I'm going to be dropping a camera off with him soon.

I'll pass this on and try to find out why he can't register.

yahoo and hotmail are, indeed, both banned addresses.

And, fact is, there is now good reason for us to now consider banning gmail, too.

Fact is it probably makes a lot of sense for us to insist that anyone who signs up in future has a "real" ISP-based address.

The reason that yahoo and hotmail addresses were banned were because they were the source of a huge proportion of all the many spam postings that were being made.

Today, the same is true for gmail.

I've just looked at a list of all members whose registered addresses are with gmail and there looks to me to be fewer than a dozen who regularly post on the forums.

There's a complication - one of our key moderators is registered with gmail - but I'm reasonably sure that he and the other gmail-registered users would understand and accept our need to bar gmail address.

Hi Bob,

I can see why you'd want to ban these web addresses but I'm with Hotmail and still log in fine. Am I right in thinking that only new members won't be able to use these addresses.

Also, I think a lot of people have Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail accounts because they are the most kept accounts and most accessible from anywhere. Since joining this forum some way back I have shed at least 4 ISP's. That's why I like using my hotmail account for forums etc etc.

But like I've already said I can see that you want to stop / reduce the spam factor.

Is there a note to new members stating that these email providers are banned?

If not would it be valid to have a paragraph on the login / sign up page.

O and I hope you're fine Bob. It's been a while.

All the best

Til
