I want to set 2 profiles for my PC. One as it is at present and one configured for video work. The problem is that when setting the Password Properties to "Users can customise the preferences etc" on reboot I get a window that says Welcome to Windows 98 which is not the one where you can type in a different user name and password. Any idea as to what is wrong? Many thanks

Windows will automatically re-logon at boot as the last user to be logged on before shutdown (if there is no password). You should be able to log-off under the Start Menu which will give you the login box.
If you change the logon client (in Network settings) to either the network client or the Microsoft Family Logon then it shouldn't auto-logon.
Personally I like the Family Logon client. You should be able to add it as a Network Client if you have Win 98 - it gives a list box of configured users, so you can just click on a name.

Hi Richard
Many thanks for your reply but I am still struggling. Microsoft Family Logon was already set in Network settings and I have created another user called "video". If I alter the system settings under this name and then reboot, the password box is not the rectangular version but a square one with "Welcome to Windows 98" and the Win98 logo on it. Which ever of 2 users I select, the system boots into what the settings were before shutdown. I am using Windows 98SE by the way. Any further advice will be very welcome. Thanks in advance.

I always do configurations like this as the "default" user. I.e. just cancel from the login dialog, and you are logged in as no-one. When the system boots, any user-based configs it needs are taken from this user. Also make sure that _all_ your users are configured to be able to "customise their own preferences". If not they will use - and change - the same settings as the default user.

It sounds to me like you are trying to make changes to system/hardware settings and I don't think this is possible with User Profiles as these are for programs, document locations, custom desktops etc. - but I could be mistaken.
If this is the case then I think you would be better using Hardware Profiles instead.(See third tab of System Properties)
