My question's are:

2. If HDV do you use MINI DV standard tapes or get the HDV ones?
3. If shooting HDV and deliver SD what is the process you use for the conversion?
4. If you are using Standard MINI DV what experience have you had with drop-outs in HDV
5. What do you use to get your HDV FOOTAGE into pc. simple firewire, matroxX2 or what?
6. Do you have a HDV deck or use the camera?
7. What software do you use for the edit?
Thanks in advance

The way your title is phrased is a little ambiguous. Are you only looking for answers from people exclusively shooting HDV and editing in HDV? Or are you asking everyone to respond so you can find out what proprtion are exclusively HDV? From the title it seems the former, from the questions it seems the latter.

. . . . . and how about two further questions:-
8. Are you hugely dissatisfied with the lack of a single standard for High Definition DVDs?
9. Are you hugely dissatisfied with the lack of a single reliable system for burnable High Definition DVDs?

I am just trying to get a picture of what others are doing on the forum with regard to HDV capture edit and I have not asked about output as at this moment is a bit obvious........very few are attempting to author to blue ray......it would seem.
Maybe you would like to answer the questions posed instead of just pulling my post apart:confused:
I am not being subversive just interested as to what other video enthusiasts / pros / semi pros are doing.

I do this:
1) Z1, FX1, XDCAM, DVCProHD HDCam
2) Sony excellence standard tapes
3) Shoot HDV or HD, Edit HD, timeline downconvert, realtime to DVCam, Procoder 3 to mpeg mastering quality for DVD, also output to HDV stream for archive.
4) never had a dropout yet - hundreds hours multicamera all over the world
5) Firewire into NX card
6) I use my FX1
7) Edius 4.54

Sorry if you feel hurt. I work all day in a situation where every job means making absolutely sure that the client knows what that want and has communicated it entirely and clearly to me. In this case I saw an ambiguity - and I queried it.
1. Zi, V1, plus various DV cameras. I have been shooting HD for three years on jobs where I think that there might be a demand for an HD version in the future (concerts, etc)
2. JVC standard tapes
3. The camera itself - I don't expect them to have a long life as things are moving fast.
4. Not a problem
5. DV Storm firewire input
6. Camera
7. Premiere 6.5 (with Vegas waiting in the wings if HD takes off)
8. Yes
9. Yes

1. What are you shooting with?--- Sony V1 HDV camera
2. If HDV do you use MINI DV standard tapes or get the HDV ones? --- Mini DV std Tapes
3. If shooting HDV and deliver SD what is the process you use for the conversion? ---AJA HD i/o
4. If you are using Standard MINI DV what experience have you had with drop-outs in HDV--- Very few but I use a new tape each time
5. What do you use to get your HDV FOOTAGE into pc. simple firewire, matroxX2 or what?---Firewire (Dont use those PC things for TV work apple mac all round here)
6. Do you have a HDV deck or use the camera?---Use the camera but plan to add a HDV deck in time
7. What software do you use for the edit?---Final Cut Studio 2 (Digidesign 002 and Pro Tools 7.4 LE with DV toolkit 2 for audio dubbing)
I shoot everything in HDV and edit in HDV as final cut splits the clips up on loading and it makes sense to keep everything in the HDV domain, I then export in whatever format is required using the AJA HD i/o hardware box. Audio dubbing is done to a guide quicktime movie and the bounced final mix is then laid back onto the master cut timeline. I can also bounce split audio mixes for dialogue, fx and music, M&E and also re-sync these to the final cut. The whole final cut project then has all components and mixes all in sync so that if any re-cuts or versioning needs to be done then all cuts can be made on the same timeline without having to re-dub. I also have access to virtual katy which is a picece of software from pinewood that will re-conform to different cut edl's.

My work flow is:-
1. What are you shooting with? - Canon XLH1
2. If HDV do you use MINI DV standard tapes or get the HDV ones? - standard tapes
3. If shooting HDV and deliver SD what is the process you use for the conversion? Procoder 3
4. If you are using Standard MINI DV what experience have you had with drop-outs in HDV - some, but hasn't really been a problem.
5. What do you use to get your HDV FOOTAGE into pc. simple firewire, matroxX2 or what? - firewire.
6. Do you have a HDV deck or use the camera? Camera. In the past I have replaced the camera for something newer and significantly better long before the heads wear out. So the extra wear and tear in using the camera as a deck isn't a problem for me.
7. What software do you use for the edit? - Avid Liquid. However I use the incamera downconversion to capture all the footage. Edit it as though it was DV, then when all the editing is done I simply recapture as HDV. My PC handles HDV fairly well, but DV is much easier.

Either - depends on the job - always Sony
3. If shooting HDV and deliver SD what is the process you use for the conversion?
Depends on the job
4. If you are using Standard MINI DV what experience have you had with drop-outs in HDV
None
5. What do you use to get your HDV FOOTAGE into pc. simple firewire, matroxX2 or what?
Firewire
6. Do you have a HDV deck or use the camera?
Deck
7. What software do you use for the edit?
PP 1.51 or Elements
8. Are you hugely dissatisfied with the lack of a single standard for High Definition DVDs?
Not yet but if Sony cripple BluRay I might be.
9. Are you hugely dissatisfied with the lack of a single reliable system for burnable High Definition DVDs?
Not yet. Only one client asked for HD but was disappointed when I told her she couldn't have it on VHS on the day of the shoot.

My immediate thoughts were put in print by Ray, as I too wasn't going to answer as I don't shoot HDV exclusively.
However, my answers are exactly the same as Ray's except that I use Sony Premiums instead of his JVC tapes, and an FX1 where he has a V1. We're thinking about becoming joined at the hip.

Ray - I am not upset and I am very please for you and Tom may you equal the royal couple in years to come..................
After reading my original post I see what You mean..................I am just a simple person though and if we were talking financial project management then I would need clarity also
Video is my second string on the bow but an important one! I find this whole new world of HDV / TRUE HD / H264 ++++++and so on....................a maze and it helps to see what others are doing.
After now selling all my SD equipment and I intend to go forward with HDV for now. Although there are a lot of new cameras out and more intresting things to come Like the Sony EX-1 and the new hybrid camera recording to TAPE AND SD CARD:eek: BELT AND BRACES!!
May I thank all those that have given a reply!

1) Sony Z1
2) Sony Premium mini DV
3) Edit in Premiere on a Sony Vaio laptop. No harder than DV, can't really see much difference in workflow..easy. Downscale in After Effects, bit slow but acceptable, quality far better then Premiere. Have tried Virtual Dub resize in Lanczos 3, pretty good too. When I'm in a hurry I just use the camera to downres...
4) Have had some drop outs.. nothing dramatic, most annoying result is that it knocks the audio out of sync by a few frames, which means I either fast forward past drop point and recatpure or if it's not too bad jiggle it on the time line. I have imported a couple of projects with HDV split and it seems better then Premiere in as much as even if you get a drop I haven't noticed the audio problem.
5) Firewire
6) Yep camera is the deck too.
7) As above Premiere Pro 2.0 and After Effects 7.0 & my favourite Magic Bullet.

Gareth
