See the following link: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=BDPS300 - then click on "operating instructions" and look up up " This player can play the following discs and files and then look up "Examples of discs that the player cannot play" and you will see at the top BD-REs/BD-Rs.
So at the time (Aug 07) Sony's newest player was launched without the ability to play BD-Rs, even though the PS3 was capable of playing them with the latest firmware at the time.
Might I suggest that this might put a small impediment in the way of distributing weddings and other short run productions on Blu-ray?
Note that there is an opinion later in the thread that indicates that Blu-ray players are not allowed to play BD-Rs except for when AACS is fully supported, but that in the future most will be able to play BD-Rs as most will fully support AACS.
The question remains however, how long will it be that the majority of Blu-ray players can't play BD-Rs, and will it be obvious to the consumers, apart from reading the small print whether or not the player that they have purchased plays BD-Rs or not.
