Paper?
Ink?
Bindings?
Glue?
Printing?
Good grief!!!
This is 15th century technology, and it
still doesn't work right. If there's
still bugs in it after 500 years, then
there always will be.
Suggestion:
Put the mag on the internet. Charge $10
per month for subscription, people billed
via credit card. Your $10 gives you access
to the current issue, and all back issues,
also a Message Board, a chat room, sample
AVI and MPGs, a search engine, a great
list of links. There's a freebie area, so people can see what they'd get if they pony up their $10.
Then people can access the mag from anywhere
in the world. Forget printers who are late, paper which is expensive, glue which unglues,
newsagents who don't stock the mag, distributors taking a chunk of the cover price, page layout artists (all done
with HTML).
You want to check through the Premiere
Tutorial? It's all there without hunting for back issues.
You want to be reminded about what the mag
said about the WonderAVI card? There's a
search facility.
You want to buy a monitor? There's links
to monitor reviews, to the manufacturer's web site, to several people who sell each one.
Ditto hard disk, video card, etc etc etc.
You want to know what problems where might
be in using a 36gb drive? Searching
the message board tells you.
You live in Australia and what to subscribe? No problem, what's your credit card number?
You live in US, France, any place you like -
CV becomes a global magazine.
Advertising - sure - we take adverts. But
the main funding is from the readership.
We have the technology ... well, I do anyhow.
I remember a meeting, about a year ago?
In which TPTB at WV seemed to be fairly keen
on this idea. And then, of course, nothing
happened (which didn't surprise me much,
you may remember that was what I said would happen).
Interested, Bob? Do you think TPTB would
go for it? Or would they rather wait until some American outfit does this, and we can
all tell ourselves, well, at least we thought about doing it.
