Fade to Black Problem

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to add an effect in Premiere Pro 2 but can't work out the best way of doing it or find any instructions online. What I want to do is add some black in the corners of the frame that blends in with the shot and then when I want to fade to black at the end of the clip, instead of a normal fade the black "grows" into the middle of the frame. I hope that makes sense but if not I'm basically trying to recreate the effect they often use on Top Gear when testing cars on their track (I'll try to find a clip to post so you can see what I mean).

If anyone can suggest a way of doing this or link to a tutorial then I'd be very grateful. I've never had a need to do this before but think it would work quite nicely on my current project so would quite like to find out how to do it.

Another question that is hopefully a bit simpler to answer is how do I get a title to rotate in the y axis ie back into the screen?

Sort of a very soft-edged diamond wipe, frozen part-way for a while and then eventually continuing to become a full wipe-in.
It may be being enhanced by the wipe-transition being used to create a soft-edged travelling matte overlay on a higher video track.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. It is encouraging that your recommendations are on the same lines as what I have been experimenting with. The problem seems to be that all these transistions don't seem to have the "soft edge" that Paul mentions as I reckon I could do it if I could find a setting to add that. So I guess the question now is, how do I add a "soft edge" or "gragient" to my transition borders in Premiere Pro?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions on the rotating titles problem?

Hi Richard,
Title: Use effect 'Basic3d'.

Mr Cheema's suggestion can be done - but done using 'gradient wipe' for which you need to have an image file mapping the black/grey/white in oval shape.
It's alot of faffing even if you know what you are doing.
If you have access to Adobe after affects, it would be relatively simple.

The framing (without dipping to black) could be done by creating a black rectangle in image editor(photoshop) with oval cutout (with edge fade) and could also tweak with 'gaussian blur' after importing to premiere.
