View Full Version : CV June will be late

[This comment in square brackets added by Bob C some little while later, point out that this thread related to the June 1999 issue, and has been resurrected a couple of years later by Chirpy by commenting to it!]

Well, I finally did finish the June issue, working without anyone other than the designer (and getting subbing help from anyone who was daft enough to let me lumber them).

And, since the issue was started two weeks late and, during the production I lost six days - bank holiday (I was working by the nothing was happening anywhere else), server crash, office move (2days), illness (2days) -it is going to be on sale late, which is the first time this has happened to CV.

All shops should have stocks by June 8, subscribers should receive copies a few days ahead of that date.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused. I hope it's worth waiting for!

Cheers

Bob C

Typical as a recent subscriber and only recieved one copy its now going to be late.
Further to add to my troubles is where is my free gift (caddy) that i was to receive, no sign as yet ( 8 weeks )or is that late as well?
An answer would be nice Bob.

Neale,

As a subsciber you will still receive the magazine ahead of everyone else.

As for your missing caddy, how can I possibly respond when I don't know your name and address?

Please phone or fax our subscriptions dept:

I'm not complaining yet as when i subscribed i was told 4 to 6 weeks for delivery of the caddy but the question has to be asked. How long does it take to type a address label and stick it on a box ? When a gift is offered as a tempter to take out a subscription a certain amount of each should be prepacked ready to go out. That's my 2p worth, but as in life all good things are worth waiting for.

I too have just signed up for a subscription and was eagerly awaiting the june issue through my letterbox but I'm not going to beat poor Bob because it's a bit late.

I think the general kind of rant at the editor is a bit misguided in relation to Computer Video magazine and it's about time we said thanks to Mr C for getting out the kind of magazine that I and presumably the rest of you all want to read.

It's a minority subject - that means not a lot of money and a lot of dedication from the few staff there are.

(But why does it take six weeks to get my hard disk caddies to me? http://www.safety-online-internet.com/host/computervideo/ubb/smile.gif )

And how does the message board turn a colon and a close bracket in a smiley?

I just faxed my subscription yesterday cause I was concerned that I was going to miss an issue of CV. As an overseas reader in HK, the distributors are not too consistent in getting the mags out; sometimes they seem to miss out a month.

I hope I don't have to wait too long to get my first subscription issue - Bob, did you receive my fax?

David

Waiting for your free gift for 6 weeks? 8 weeks? Haha!

Mine took 6 MONTHS! ... and 4 phone calls!

Keep smiling http://www.safety-online-internet.com/host/computervideo/ubb/smile.gif))

And as for suggesting Bob should have a holiday ..... since June is late, that probably means July is behind schedule, so "Sorry Bob! No holidays for you yet!" http://www.safety-online-internet.com/host/computervideo/ubb/smile.gif

I got my free gift in 4 weeks, perhaps i'm lucky. It seems that CV mag is advertising for staff..and we all take hols..and we all get sick sometimes, don't we?
So I accept the late CV mag as one of those things. It's the withdrawal symptoms that ate difficult.

It's still not in my branch of WHSmiths. Should it be, or have they dropped it?

We received our copies of June into the office on Monday. This should mean that subscribers will get theirs by Thursday or Friday, and that shop should all have received issues by Saturday or, at latest, Monday.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Oh, and Tez - I've checked the email database of my cix email address (bcrabtree@cix.co.uk) and there are no messages from you about subscriptions.

Unless *you've* changed your email address (or sent your email to another of my email addresses) I don't think you are on the books.

Best ring our subscription hotline to check -the number is 01858 433 608

Sorry Bob

The emails I sent you on the 18th May will be "From :Cath Arnold" as I forgot to change from my wifes' account when I sent them.

Sorry about this but I did include Credit card details across the 2 emails so would be grateful if you would check again. I'll try to get through on your hotline anyway as well

Thanks
Tez

Tez,

Yup, I found the two emails (dated 18/5) and did pass the info into the system. However, I think that, since there was nothing there to say when to start that the first one you'll get will be the July issue (the order for June having been placed with the printers well in advance of your details being received).

If you have any problems getting hold of June - it should be in the shops by the weekend at latest - email me (DO NOT POST HERE) and, if you want, I'll get one sent out to you, and a deduction made from your credit card.

Cheers

Finally got my hands on the June Issue! First impression - better quality paper, presumably to accompany the better quality price. I find myself turning the pages carefully, like a coffee table book. Seriously, that alone is a great improvement and does make me feel happier about the price increase (not that I am unhappy about it). Have now also read the DV Raptor article, looks like I will have to join that tribe, this fence is getting uncomfortable.

bcrabtree
11th June 1999, 18:21
The paper quality is still not as good as we want, and the weight of the paper is likely to increase again in the August issue.

As for Raptor - well, I'd seen one dem'd, and I knew the theory, and I edited the review, but today I actually took delivery of one installed in a system built by DVC.

Er, it's how shall I put it? Lovely?

Very lovely!

If, you have it set up with a camcorder or VCR that has analogue and DV in/out (I'm using the cheaper of the two Sony DV Walkman models), during virtually every part of the process, you can monitor the picture on the PC monitor (in my case TWO PC monitors) and on an external TV.

And, blimey, what a difference it makes having two monitors when you are using a program, such as Premiere, which has loads of little windows and a bunch of big ones, too.

I'll report back in the Desktop Video General Forum over the coming days and weeks.

Oh, but, one little tip for Premiere users, whatever system they are running - drop a high res still on the timeline, and then experiment with the Image Pan filter - instant (well, if you ignore the rendering time) rostrum camera work, including zooms, and pans.

How much does a proper rostrum camera stand cost? I mean one that would actually allow you to fly all over the place, as this filter does.

Bob,

Much better issue in June. I didn't like this paper as much as the old kind, but the reviews were better and there were no articles that had no association with CV Editing. All you need to do now is get rid of the Buyers Guide and maybe add 5 more pages to the mag and it will be much better.

Paul

bcrabtree

The buyer's guide - in one form or another - will always be in the mag.

However, in the issue we are currently trying to finish - July - I've knocked out two pages. And, for August, we'll probably knock out a few more.

As for the paper, we will be moving to an even heavier paper, probably in July.

Bob, you can't afford a proper rostrum camera. If you need to use one, go to Ken Morse, he's reasonably priced. The full kit has a setup like a photo enlarger with the camera where the lamphouse should be. The bottom table has XY motors and a rotation, and the camera goes up and down the column, all motorised. The lens focus is tracked with camera position. The whole shebang is software controlled.

And if you think Premiere does a good imitation, you should see what you can do with Cinestream, the resulting image quality is miles better than Premiere can manage.

Bob

Pray tell. Are you surprised he bought the mag or in true editorial style do you just enjoy the padding?

However from reading the excellent new website it looks like it's going to be a great issue so well done, I can't wait to get mine http://www.dvdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ubb/smile.gif

He he,

I couldn't resist it Bob...not after looking at the "first two names out of the hat" on p.14 of the June 2001 issue. It probably threw a few people. http://www.dvdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ubb/biggrin.gif

quote:
Just checked your website, are you a communist?

No Chaifox...It's just that when I released my video it had my website printed on the cover. As it took me so long to finish my film I never had time to work out how to design (let alone upload) my own website. So I just wrote down the details of the film on that awful, bright red (hence the reference to Communist) background. Otherwise no-one would realise why the site was bare.
When I've managed to copy all the slides to my hard-drive, I'll have a go at updating it.

Cheers,

Chirpy.

I would just like to say well done to Bob and the team for knocking out a cracking "up and coming" magazine. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have this brilliant message board, or a stunning web site aswell! Alas, everything in life has its teething problems (especially NLE computers! Damn it!!) and people do fall I’ll (you could have said the printing factory had burnt down or something like that bob!!), and caddies do require a phone call to be received, but I think that everyone at CV has done well to keep the magazine alive and growing.
Just a few suggest though, that I think may improve things a little.....

1) Not just reviews of new equipment, but mentions of old stuff for beginners and those on a tight budget.

2) A guide to suppliers (this one could really do us good!) what happens is you review suppliers of computers say, like you do at the moment, but with customer feedback, prices, service and things like that. This would give one company a good advantage, but also discount to the consumer as prices would be lowered!! Also the same with equipment suppliers.

3) Mbar a programme or DVD of the month, that uses the best effects (that can be taught to us using premier or something).

Just a few ideas!!
