Hi Julian - I've heard that smashing a crisp lettuce or cabbage with a baseball or cricket bat can produce a nice fat crunchy punch sound. You may want to dampen the bat with a towel, or padding foam, to avoid too obvious a "slap" sound when they make contact. You may only get half a dozen goes at it before your lettuce becomes a messy green pulp though!
Or, fill a small canvas sack with rice or grain, hang it from the ceiling, and belt it with a bat also
gives a nice crunch.
Let me know if you try any of these and how it sounded!

Hi Julian,
In my old cine days I collected a number of BBC Sound Effects records (12" LPs) and I found them really useful. I recall there was one called "Sounds of Horror" or something like that and I searched my collection but only found it on cassette. Skimming through it there are a number of wierd sounds such as firing squads, ghosts, bats, "nutters in the attic" and the like but also a few slapping/punching sounds. I don't know where you would get hold of the record, but if it helps the reference of one album (includes: modern warfare/period battles/submarines/air raids etc) is "MONO RED 126M" and is dated 1972. Others are stereo and have but all have the "RED ***M" reference.
Hope it helps.
Regards,
Paul

Thanks guys.
I've managed to get the fx I need by recording hand slapping & punching and then playing around with them in cool edit.
They turned out quite good.
