Hmmmmm

I have just played my FX1 footage, and via SVideo wire, played the footage through my regular (non HD) TV - and too my suprise -the footage came out. (Ableit squashed as it was a 4:3 TV)

Anyway, I shot on 1080 interlaced HDV - I thought I would only be able to play this back on a HDV monitor?

Am I also correct in thiking shooting on 1080i HDV is the best picture quality I can obtain with my camera?

Are you sure that the camera wasn't performing the auto HD>SD conversion?

What he's saying is that the camera is doing a down-conversion on replay. It can be set not to do that, but to output component HD instead. It's all in the menu settings, when in doubt, consult the manual.

1080i is the best the camera can do.

I think you'll find that the FX1/Z1 will give an SD output from the Svideo and composite video outputs regardless of whether the HDV/DV downconvert is on or off.

The downconvert on/off only decides whether the 1394 socket outputs HDV or DV.

When the camera is set to HDV the component output is HD component.

When the camera is set to DV the component output is SD component (so, for example, the SD component output can be viewed on a standard TV if you have a component to RGB converter and go in through the TV's SCART socket).

Quite right, Ray. The menu settings only switch the DV and analogue component outputs, the composite and s-video are always there (downconverted either from HD tape or direct from the camera, or as SD direct from the camera if it's set for SD).
