Firefox and WMV files

I have a web site with WMV files that play fine in IE but not in Firefox.

I link to the WMV files via a WVX file which is a text file e.g.:

<ENTRY>
<REF HREF="bish1med.wmv" />
</ENTRY>
</ASX>

However, in Firefox, clicking on the link just opens up the text file, rather than playing the WMV file. Firefox has the WMV, WVX plugins installed.

I'm not sure whether this is a problem with the way I'm linking to the WMV files or a problem with the browser - any ideas gratefully received.

I've had similar problems with Firefox, so I uninstalled it today!
One really annoying feature was that it wouldn't open my video hosting site:
www.neptune.com (http://www.neptune.com) which I use to upoad any videos I need to send to people.
I move between Opera and IE6 now - and even Opera isn't bug-free. Love it or hate it, at least IE6 works very well...

ITS NOT A PROBLEM WITH FIREFOX!!!!!

Ok now I have that off my chest it actually lies with the default configuration in most webservers and is __VERY__ easily fixed. You just need to add a MIME type. You may need to ask your websever provider but they should have no problems in adding this:

The solution to this problem is to add the following line into the httpd.conf file for apache (i.e. server admin must do this):

AddType Windows Media Audio/Video file .wmv

If this is done then firefox users will have the file open in mediaplayer as it should usually. smile.gif

I had a problem with firefox, it wanted to play all audio with quick time which may not seem a problem
but midi files that I had created in a music program and put on a website played back sounding very strange, the only way I could get firefox to ask me which player I wanted to use was to de-install quicktime, now when opening files, audio or video I was asked, now midi wmv and real all open ok

That would be quicktimes plugin trying to take hold of all. It has a habbit of doing that smile.gif

Yes, trouble is nearly everyone will do the default install as is done for nearly every program!

I can't find these MIME settings or Preferences in control panel? (Windows XP)

I have just re-installed Quicktime and in the MIME
settings unchecked everything, it did say as you said, I can go back to control panel/preferences, I then downloaded a midi file in firefox and although I had already set media player to play these files, Yes, you've got it quicktime tried to open showing their logo with a crack through it, I presume because the plug in is missing? this crashed firefox. Now, I don't know if it's because this is the free player, but the MIME settings are not available, you do have preferences but no MIME only connection speeds etc,

I am not able to play wmv files in Firefox. This is a website that is currently being hosted locally on my computer and it works fine in Ie. When I try to open the movie in Firefox I get this message:

"Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file. Be sure the path is typed correctly. If it is, the file does not exist at the specified location, or the computer where the file is stored is offline."

I've found the MIME settings now there's a drop down
menu under connection speeds, if I uncheck middi, Firefox allows me to use media player but I had to browse program files to set it. I have a new problem now firefox won't play embedded sounds a java error
comes up?
