Hi Hendrik:
Have you worked with the Helix Server from Real? We are looking at using for video on demand but seem to have a question as to the best codec to use. WM9 looks good from here, but there is a questiopn as to if Helix really supports WM9 with VBR. We are looking at encoding longish programs and using the server for on demand viewing from around the state.

Can I suggest that you sheck with the WM talk list. The postings are all archived, so you should be able to find any relevant discussions there.

I have seen not much experience with windows media on helix but i don't really hesitate on its compatibility with windows 9.

from realnetworks website:
"Interoperability with all default Microsoft codecs shipped with Windows Media Player since version 6.4
"

It's hard to find references on variable bit rate but can't really see the problem since the streaming protocol hasn't changed for windows media.

I'm not really sure nut I think this clip should use VBR, its on our Helixserver. (I don't know how you check if the clip is vbr, in realplayer there is loads of information in the statistics window).

It's in swedish so you probobly won't understand it but I guess the video is what's of interest.

Well just got the offical word from REAL, and unfortunatley it is NO

The Helix Server only supports Windows Media content over the MMS protocol. Therefor WMV VBR files are not supported. In addition there are some known issues with the Windows Media Audio 9.0 codecs.

define 'video surveillance' ?

why use a streaming server for video surveillance , surely an expensive solution for such a simple task.

set up ip cameras and work from there , no server costs
