Hi All

I have done a couple of simple experiments encoding to QT with Sorenson 3 that is "built in" to MSP7 but having looked into this forum and read a couple of other areas I understand the following:

MS Windows Media encoder can make wmv files that will be smaller and should offer reasonable quality per file size compared to QT sorenson.

Now, I did read that MS encoder 9 makes files that are not viewable in WMP 6.4 (which I use because it is stable and unlike MMP 7 and above does not like to "phone home" with system information etc.

My question(s) - can I use use WMencoder 7.1 with WMP6.4 left in place? Does MS WMencoder live happily with Ulead MSP7? Is there a way to avoid needing the MS WMencoder i.e. is there a a plug-in available for MSP7 to make WMV files?

I hope you can guide me here many thanks http://www.dvdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ubb/smile.gif

PS May have to bite the bullet an install WMP7.1 (or 9 ohhhh!) because even with the MS codecs 8 installed wmv's do not all play I get occassional decompressor errors.

Is WMP9 stable etc

Copied from other thread

Just to give you a quick update that MS have released a new VCM version of the WM9 codecs - this means that the 6.4 player can now cope with WM9 content.

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR> 8th July 2003 from the WMTalk list

Today we released the final version of the Windows Media Video 9 VCM codec, designed to meet 2 important needs:

1. Legacy encoding and editing applications can now support the WMV9 codec in file containers such as AVI.

2. WMV 9 content can now reach desktops running Windows Media Player 6.4

For customers using the 6.4 player, the WMV9 VCM decoder will be automatically downloaded the first time the player attempts to play content that has been encoded in WMV9. For installation on a PC where internet access or administrator privileges are not available, we have released a standalone installer package that can be scripted to install using any software distribution software.

The standalone package containing the codec, EULA and documentation outlining how to incorporate the VCM codec into applications is available for download at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/codecs/vcm.aspx
