Does anyone know if there is a package out there that enables serving of Windows Media from a linux box? I doubt there is M$ support but are there any other packages available?

Helix Universal server is by my knowledge the only one capabable doing that right now. Since M$ have opened up the liscencing of windows mediq to be built on other plqtforms (lots of settopboxes rune linux embedded servers e.g.) I assume that more server software will be released soon.
For Linux kernel 2.4.18 is recomended.
They have a FAQ on Linux issues on their website too... http://www.realnetworks.com/resources/contentdelivery/server/linuxsupportfaq.html

Thanks for the linux info link and the apeedy reply! A couple of questions - does the Helix server do all the formats that the windows media server does? Will we have to wait for the release of the linux-based windows media server to enable client-side use of windows media player from a linux server, or is there open source that enables this?

Yes.
It's pretty much media agnostic, it also supports Windows Media 9, Quicktime, MPE-1 to MPEG-4, all Realvideo formats, Flash and a bunch of others
I like Helix server, it is very manageble, runs very reliably on our Linux servers, has nice maintenance tools, etc...
Only downside is the price, I think about 4000 US$/liscence but I have to check that. There is a basic server but it doesn't support Windows Media/other non-real formats

Sorry, your question is not so clear... Linux based Windows media clients?
So far Linux based Helix server can stream to Windows clients with no problem.

Sorry I should have made myself clearer ;)
Is there currently any way to enable people to use Windows Media Player to view streams from a linux server or will we have to wait for the release of the linux-based windows media server?

Sure
when streams are hosted on a Linux based Helix server (not free) they should be able to view windows media content hosted on that server, that's the idea of a Universal format server isn't it http://www.dvdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ubb/wink.gif

There is no Windows Media client (for V9) available for Linux AFAIK.
You can always use a windows emulator to run a WM client.
I think that's the question that was being asked.
Hope this helps
