I'm trying to reduce a mpeg file size of 3Mb to around 300 - 400 Kb to enable a fairly quick download time with a 56K Modem.Have tried a Canopus Web Video Wizard programme with no success - the clips seem to be of very poor quality with anything other than "broadband speed (256K)". Any advice re. settings, software would be much appreciated!!

Try

- resolution: 200x160 pixels
- framerate: 12 fps or less if there is not too much action ( I wouldn't go below 8)
- 2 pass encoding

Canopus webvideo doesn't give you too much control over the encoding process, I would download Windows Media Encoder 9 at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx

It's a free download

However I must say that if the quality of the source is bad quality, MPEG1 isn't great, than encoding the file, even with the latest codecs, won't deliver miracles, garbage-in garbage-out....

Totally with Hendrik on the garbage in garbage out.

You might however be able to get a lower data rate with MPEG 4 without recking your quality too much
