View Full Version : RealOne player refuses to play Real 8 content?

Hi all,

I've had a few questions from people unable to play my streaming Real 8 videos using Real Networks' Real One player.

Does the player only work with the new codec? Are they trying to force me to re-encode all my video?

If so, then I'm tempted to scrap Real from my system, thereby saving myself space, bandwidth, and a lot of money.

Or is this just pre-Christmas paranoia?

Cheers,

Pete

Aha!

I see the problem!

It's not the codec that Real One player doesn't like - it's the embedded player scripts.

For RealNetworks to suddenly decide to scrap support for existing embedded players is utter lunacy.

Looks like I might be saying 'bye bye' to Real video on my website!

Real has changed the programming interface to control the player embedded in a webbrowser. This means that a website developer now must take control of the Realplayer, the Realoneplayer and the windows media player.

It's a strategy I think to push development for RealOne and make 'content' which requires a download of their latest player.

It might be a compensation for the general lack of genuine RealOne content on the web (most producers seem to be 'content' with Real8 and have thousands of hours of produced Real8 video) and hence lack of market share for their new player.
Afterall aren't we all sick of installing another spyware and spamming application like the Realplayer.

Frankly I would say goodbye to real. This of course is not a good gesture towards the Linux community for which Real and Quicktime are the only two propriatary formats they can play. I think with the further evolution of tools to encode standards based MPEG-4 things might move in the right direction and Real might be forgotten for good. MPEG-4 v2 still lacks good tools. I think everybody is waiting for the awesome MPEG-4 10, which as it seems. has the capacity to blow away all proprietary solutions.

Thanks Hendrik!

I've just looked at the visitor stats on my sites, and it seems that 98% of all visitors are using either Win 98 or Win XP. The rest are using Macs, and I'm hopeful that Microsoft Media Player is just as Mac-friendly as RealPlayer...

So, does anyone have a postal address for the Real Networks head office? I'd like to send them a middle-finger salute! http://www.dvdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks again,

Pete

ROFL!

Probably the best advice I've received in a long time!

I met Rob Glazer once, and this will be a pleasure!
