corel knockout

Does anyone have any experience of corel knockout to share. In particular how does the masking process compare with other (not necessaryly from corel?

Have a workmate who lectures in computer graphics ...... i've never seen someone so happy with a corel product.

Will tell you more once he's played with its capabilities a bit longer.

Corel Knockout is excellent, even better is that it comes with some nice tutorials. It is a bit fiddly to get your completed mask/alpha channel into Photoshop if you are a novice, but once you've done it, it really is very simple.

Corel Knockout is a background removal program.

Person ( with frizzy hair )in front of pyramids , remove background , leave Person ( with Frizzy hair ).

Take edited picture , load into photoshop ( for example ) and put in front of eiffel tower using layers.

Leaves Photoshop extract tool way behind in technology , quality.

Ah, I see. Could be very useful.

BTW, I never did believe photgraphs anyway. Remember all those Victorian photos of little girls in woodland, surrounded by flying fairies (no, honest, stop laughing, I'm serious). Every image is just that, an image, a presentation, take it or leave it, but never use the old adage "the camera doesn't lie". It's damned hard to get it to tell anything close to the truth.

Wouldn't do a thing like that. I *know* the tooth fairy exists, because Terry Pratchett says so. Not so sure about Father Christmas thoug, my chimney isn't really big enough.

According to my workmate anything between "not very long" and " a lot less than any other program he's used".

I'll tell you that he normally isn't easily impressed with new software and especially corel software.

When i get my machine working again , i'm trying it out.

please note : corel knockout only does this one job , WELL , but at a rather hefty price.

Speed depends on the size of the image etc, but as a guide, if you do one of the tutorials on Corels white teddy bear with all it's little bits of fluffy fur, it takes me a minute to draw round it and about 20 seconds for Corel to select it, with stunning accuracy. Obviously the more complex the background the longer it takes but it saves you an awful lot of work, the only down side is that it is extremely ram hungry, normally about 5 times the image size as a rough guide.
