Digidesign, part of Avid, who make the totally professional ProTools multitrack audio editing and mixing system have released a free version, I think its called freetools. Its basically an 8 track version, instead of 24 track, clearly to get everyone using it, and then upgrading later.

its a large download, and It too 1 hour 12 mins from my home, (less from yours Bob) and its the best 72 pence I've spent in a long time.

it's fantastic.....

I'd recommend getting the demo music file downloads (although quite big) as well . Pro Tools 5 free is quite complex and the demo gives you a good overview of what you can do.

Works on a G4 and also imacDV. It can be tricky geting demo plug-ins working on some set-ups. The trick is to pull out and back-up the standard plugin files from the DAE folder in the sys folder before installing new plugins.
