Iam having a new problem with viewing on external monitor. Have not had this prob before and of course I cannot print to tape either as the timeline freezes . I can output via imovie, can view externally during log and capture ive tried all the edit preferrence changes that I can think of. Im running a G4/400 m with 193 ram and a 20 gb hard drive and additional 30 ide , 7200 speed . camera is a sony xv1000 cap rate is 720/576
and all preferences seem to be the same . i'd love some help as this is a tottally new problem and I did not deliberately uncheck or change any settings

Jenny, I presume you are having a problem with FCP. Does your playback freeze at the same point every time?

Steve no it doesnt . Yes FCP. as I said it plays during imovie , log and capture but not from the timeline . It will update to a still or frozen pic when I finish playing but not during the playback and of course this means that I cant record as it is frozen in the camera too.
I capture at 720/576 and all the preferences check out as being in that format . virtual memory is off and it hasnt been a problem before . Ive outputted quite a lot of stuff with no dramas.
I was working on using the wireframe tool to include a P.I.P. over a clip and thought of millions of ways that it could be a bonus and Kaput it went .
look forward to an intelligentreply while I quietly tear my hair.
From ausrtalia i'm using Pal

Jenny,

What could be happening is that the render preview that FCP has created of the overlayed PIP has got nasty. Instead of dumping all the render files try selecting the PIP clip and cutting to remove it from the timeline. See if the underlying footage plays back now. If it does, then paste the PIP clip back into the sequence and hit render all. That will create a new render preview clip for that segment of the sequence. Hopefully that will sort out the playback problem.

If not then, have you tried a reinstall of FCP? It sounds like something may have got corrupt in the system, either a FCP component or a driver for firewire or something. It may be worth reinstalling FCP, the firewire drivers (v2.4) and also the ATI graphics card update.
