Question For Matt Smith

Page 41 of Showreel, bottom of the first column, combining footage with opposite Field Orders, what was your verdict? especially as you used Ulead Media Studio Pro & the HDV plug in 2.

I think I worked it out but would be interested in your take, I did my own comparison test a couple of weeks ago with my FX1 & mini-dv.Matt's email

"To my knowledge and from the tests I did there isn't a problem with the field orders. I sat and worked the whole shebang out and basically if you want to correct this yourself you just have to shift one of the pieces of video up one pixel and duplicate the line you lost at one end. However after I had worked out how simple it was I tested the process without doing anything and it worked anyway so I can only surmise the software sorts it out. The other factor is that in blowing the DV footage up 200% to match scale you are actually completely changing the field system anyway. Again the software seems to sort this out for you. I certainly didn't have any problems. Of course others may know different, I just know it looked fine."My reply

Hi Matt

In my limited tests I have gone for Frame (No Fields) using MS Pro 7, HDV Plugin 2

However until I test some sport or fast moving footage I'm not sure If I cracked it re: any jerkiness.

btw I am doing the opposite to you, My HDV footage is currently been converted to SDV footage on the final render, I intend to use the FX1 as the wide shot cam on stage plays & zoom in up to 4:1 on any parts I miss with my 2 MiniDV's.

My first couple of tests seem to have worked OKMatt's 2nd email
None of my footage had fast horizontal movement so I may have been
lucky there.

Cheers

Matt
Any takers for the correct way, I may even have to film a football match to work it out for myself ;)

Just bear in mind that the "field dominance" in video refers not only to which field contains the first line in the frame, but which field comes first in real time. If you're shooting film-style (i.e. progressive) that doesn't matter (because both fields are from a single exposure), but interlace with the fields in the wrong order looks truly horrendous on medium-speed motion.

Alan

I've used Frame (No Fields) + perform auto de-interlace (MSPro option) in the DVD render settings, any comment?

The video seems fine, there was some quick movement, I think I need some sports footage to make sure it's working.

I am going to try & digest this

I can't comment on MSPro, not enough experience. If you can handle medium and fast motion and it looks right, then you're either doing the right thing or one of the right things smile.gif

Just remember that, in interlaced video, the concept of "frame" dosn't really apply because you get 50 separate images per second. For convenience, they're bundled in pairs and called frames, but it's only for convenience. That's why field dominance is arguable, because it's a consequence of the arbitrary pairing of fields. It's only when you need to handle complete frames that you need to worry about it.
